Let's chat about elder abuse - Questions and Answers

As a SPARK member in the Northern Territory for Elder Abuse Action Australia, I am happy to attend Seniors Morning Teas in the Darwin\Palmerston region to have informal chats about Elder Abuse Action Australia and Elder Abuse in general including workplace abuse that seniors may unfortunately encounter.

What is Elder Abuse Action Australia?

A peak national organisation focused on eliminating abuse of older people.

Works on advocacy, policy, best practices, and education.

Offers resources for individuals and organisations to prevent and respond to abuse.

EAAA provides a national framework, while AdvocateNT implements and promotes it in the NT.

We collaborate to ensure older Australians, especially those in the NT, have the support and resources to live free from harm, covering financial, physical, psychological, and other forms of abuse.

Purpose: The EAAA SPARK network, focuses on strengthening advocacy and support, especially for older people in remote areas.

Role in Advocacy: SPARK representatives like Craig Hubbard often engage in direct, on–ground advocacy, such as visiting various services to support older people.

Focus Areas: EAAA focuses on preventing abuse, educating the public, and providing resources to combat elder abuse, with 2026 conference themes like “Stand Up, Speak Out”.

AdvocateNT extends this advocacy through lived experience to include workplace abuse that impacts older workers.

In summary, AdvocateNT represents a local presence working with a national movement (EAAA) to protect older people from abuse in Australia, especially in the Northern Territory.

EAAA Rersources

What is a SPARK member of EAAA?

An EAAA SPARK member is a representative of the Seniors Panel for Advocacy, Rights, and Knowledge (SPARK), an expert group launched by Elder Abuse Action Australia (EAAA) in 2024.

SPARK members are older individuals from every Australian state and territory who use their lived experiences to combat ageism and elder abuse.

Key Roles of a SPARK Member

  • Elevating Voices: They place the needs of older people at the center of EAAA’s advocacy, policy, and educational work.
  • Advocacy & Engagement: They engage in on-the-ground advocacy, such as visiting services, to support older people at risk of or experiencing abuse.
  • Targeting Specific Issues: They address specific, often overlooked issues, such as elder abuse in remote areas and workplace abuse against older workers.
  • Advancing Strategy: They contribute to national strategies, such as the National Plan to End the Abuse and Mistreatment of Older People 2026–2036.

Background and Context

EAAA: Elder Abuse Action Australia is a national organization focused on eliminating the abuse of older people through policy, advocacy, and education.

Structure: SPARK members, like Craig Hubbard in the Northern Territory, collaborate with local bodies such as AdvocateNT and Darwin Community Legal Services (DCLS) to provide a national framework for protection.

SPARK members are essentially frontline advocates within the EAAA structure who ensure that the voices and experiences of older Australians drive the movement to end abuse.

SPARK Members volunteer their time to their community.
